The Ghettos
The ghettos were a terrible experience for the Jews. Ghettos are were the Venetian authorities compelled Jews to live, which was authorized by Austrian Emperor Charles V. He created these ghettos in Frankfurt, Rome, Prague, and other cities. During World War II the ghettos were often enclosed, which was considered city districts, causing the Jews to live in harsh conditions and no contact to the real world. The ghettos separated the Jews from the non-Jewish population and the other Jewish communities. There were at least 1,000 ghettos built, by the Germans. The Germans saw the establishment of ghettos as a measure to isolate, control, and segregate Jews. The Nazis took authority over the Jews and established the ghettos in the generalgouvernement, which is the territory in Poland by a German civilian Government. The Jews were viewed to the Nazis as an inferior race. The Nazis plan was to stop the Jews from taking control, so they decided to create ghettos. Ghettos also made it possible for the Nazis to exterminate mass numbers of Jews. They are often closed off by walls, barbed wire fences, or gates. Ghetto are extremely crowed with everyone in close quarters. These "homes" were not fun for the Jews, and that is what the Nazis wanted for the Jews. The daily life in the ghettos were harsh and unlivable. There were people that were stripped from their homes and lived in poverty. There was not enough food for everyone to eat three meals a day and some days lots of Jews went without food. There were many Jews that risked their lives, by smuggling food into the ghettos, just so they can have "real" food to eat. This caused many inhabitants to become ill and affected by diseases. Although, there were lots of hard times, books, intellectual pursuits, music, and theater helped them escape from the unbearable reality surrounding them. The inhumane ways of the Jews caused them to sacrifice their lives because of the terrible ways they wee forced to live. MLA Citations:
