Concentration & Labor Camps
In Nazi Germany, between 1933 and 1945 concentration and labor camps were apart of their regime. The first concentration camps were established soon after Hitler had an appointment as chancellor in January of 1933. The Storm Troopers established larger camps in Oranienburg, north of Berlin; Esterwegan, near Hamburg; Dachau, northwest of Munich; and Lichtenburg, in Saxony. Between 1933 and 1945, Nazi Germany established over 20,000 camps that they imprisoned millions within. They had different types of camps such as, forced-labor camps, transit camps, and killing centers.
Following the German Invasion of Poland in 1939, the Nazis open forced-labor camps where thousands of prisoners that were held there died due to starvation, exposure, or exhaustion. They used killing centers in the camps exclusively for mass murder. Chelmo, was the first killing center that opened in December of 1941. Then the Nazis constructed gas chambers to increase the efficiency and to make it more personal for the perpetuator. At the Auschwitz camp, the Birkenau killing center has four gas chambers. When they were deporting the most amount of people they had been to the camps, up to 6,000 Jews were being gasses there everyday.
Millions of people were inprisoned and abused at these different types of camps. The Storm Troopers, Germans with the helps of their collaborators murdered more than 3 million Jews just in the killing centers alone. Very few people actually survived these camps.
